AI and machine learning is something that almost every company wants to incorporate nowadays. However, two main reasons often cause these kinds of initiatives to fail. Firstly, the newest developments in research do not directly apply to most of the problems the industry faces. These are more centered around data availability issues, data quality issues, transparency, and trust. Therefore, the use of advanced models is not a viable option in the first stages of a project, most likely resulting in the project stagnating. Secondly, the gap between data science projects based on historical data and AI running on production data is huge. Formats are often different and providing scalability and transparency is an issue.
For those two reasons, we believe that the focus at the beginning of a project should switch from fancy AI to creating a solid backbone of data engineering, to ensure that a project is ready for production with a robust and useful AI.
During this masterclass, we want to present the open-source tool we are using to build production pipelines and the 4 focus areas that we believe will contribute to a successful project the customer will actually use.
The tool we use is the Accelerator, which is an open-source tool from eBay and we use it for mainly two reasons.
- It has a bookkeeping functionality that allows you to always trace back how any results are produced. This provides transparency to data science.
- It allows for parallelization and therefore provides us with scalability.
The 4 focus areas that we believe to be the key to a successful project are:
- Data cleanup without throwing any data away
- Use several data formats simultaneously
- Choose the correct parallelization criteria
- Finding ways to incorporate different data sources with different formats
Learnings from this Masterclass:
- The newest AI techniques are often not the solution to the problems that most industries face.
- Putting time and effort into data formats, transparency, and scalability in the beginning will massively help the project in the long run.
- Thinking long-term, with a production mindset, from the beginning will provide the highest chance of a successful project.

Vattenfall aims to help society break free from fossil fuels. Wind power is a core ingredient for decarbonization.
Four windfarms off the Swedish coast are currently being developed by Vattenfall, which together would contribute energy equivalent to the consumption of 3,4 million households.
In this masterclass, we will introduce the role of offshore wind in reaching the climate targets, as well providing the energy needed for the industrial transformation and maintaining Swedish competitiveness.
We will have a look at what is means to plan, build and operate an offshore windfarm, and give examples of how offshore wind power can give positive impacts on the society.

With increased need for fossil-free electricity and valuation of security of supply, nuclear is seen as an alternative for electricity generation in more and more countries. During this masterclass you will be guided on what role Small Modular Reactors could play in the transition of the energy system and why more and more businesses talk about that compare to big conventional nuclear reactors. There will also be an update on Vattenfall’s ongoing feasibility study on SMR’s at Ringhals.
